Medicinal Shiitake Mushroom Cultivation for Women Livelihood(2017)Phase II

Lentinula edodes (Berk.) Singer, known as "Shiitake"
and commonly called Japanese mushroom, is a white
rot wood decay fungus.
Cultivation of Shiitake in India is yet to start and
customization of technology for natural growing in
mountain carried out.
Cultivation of Shiitake mushroom was standardized on
locally available saw mill waste of popular and
eucalyptus wood which otherwise burnet and
contribute to pollution.
This simple technology provide economic returns to
farmers and diversify mushroom cultivation which
otherwise is dominated by button mushroom.
Nutritional and therapeutic properties of Shiitake are
significantly better than button mushroom.
Technology package for cultivation of medicinal
mushroom Shiitake (Lentinula edodes) on saw mill
waste was standardized and pilot scale commercial
cultivation with community involvement with 400
bags of 1 Kg Popular and Eucalyptus saw dust enriched
with nutrients and wheat bran was started.
H.P. 182 Kg fresh Shiitake mushroom was harvested
from this cultivation trial.
This was first ever community based trial of this prized
mushroom and is expected to diversify mushroom
cultivation and provide nutritionally rich food
supplement to the consumers and benefit to the
cultivators.
Complete nutritional analysis was carried out of the
Shiitake cultivated under natural conditions and is
observed to contain high Potassium (1650mg/100g)

Introduction :
Innovation & Novelty:
Shiitake Mushroom
Sawdust Substrate Preparation
Spawned Bag
Cultivation in Rural Household
Spawned sawdust bags supplied to the growers for cultivation under natural condition.
Easy to cultivate and require less labour and cultivation involvement than button
mushroom cultivation
Shiitake Mushroom can be dried in sun for sale and no urgency to sell fresh in distress
sale to avoid spoilage.
Improve nutritional and immune system. Decoction of shiitake used in primary health
care to cure common cold and viral fever.
HRG Shimla planning to setup bulk production facility of spawned bag prepration
under SEED-DST TARA support programme to facilitate commercial cultivation of
this mushroom in mountain households with active involvement of organized women
groups.
Provide 100-125% net profit to grower .
Better economic returns. to farmers with fresh
mushroom costs INR 200/Kg and dried @
INR2000/Kg.
